Local Attractions – Things to do in Portobello, Edinburgh

While Edinburgh city centre has many well known attractions, there are also plenty of local attractions in the Portobello area close to our B&B.


We’ve highlighted just some of the main local attractions below;


1) Swimming baths, gym & indoor bowls


Just a short stroll from our Edinburgh Guest House you’ll find swimming baths and a leisure centre with gym which is run by Edinburgh Leisure. The Swim Centre also has Turkish Baths, and a fitness studio.


At the other end of Portobello Promenade there is a renowned indoor bowls centre which also has a soft play area for young children and a restaurant that’s popular with locals and tourists alike.


2) Golf courses


There are two public golf courses within a five minute drive of our B&B. Portobello Golf Course is a 9 hole facility run by the local council and it provides an enjoyable golfing experience for beginner’s and seasoned golfers alike.


Heading towards the Port of Leith you’ll find Craigentinny Golf Course which is also run by the local council and is an 18 hole par 67 course. Craigentinny boasts beautiful views of Arthur’s Seat, an extinct volcano near the city centre.


3) Sailing & kayaking club


If you prefer life on the ocean waves to walking the fairways, then there is a local sailing and kayaking club within a five minute walk from our front door.


Situated at Portobello Promenade the sailing and yachting club allows you to take to the Firth of Forth and enjoy the spectacular scenery over to the Kingdom of Fife while enjoying some water sports.


4) Shops, bars and restaurants


Portobello High Street is at the end of our road and is home to an eclectic mix of local shops and national High Street brands.


There are two very nice bars on Portobello Promenade that are well worth a visit for their relaxing sea views while you eat or drink. The Dalriada & Espy are both very close to our Guest House and are within easy walking distance.


Portobello High Street is home to a number of restaurants including Reds Family Bistro and the St. Andrews Italian Restaurant. There is also a local Indian Restaurant and a number of takeaway shops nearby so you can enjoy fish and chips on the beach.

5) Beach and seaside walks


Walking along the beach at Portobello is a relaxing way to spend some time. There is also a coastal walk that takes you right along through Joppa and into Musselburgh where’s there’s a delightful harbour.


If you have your own transport there are a number of beautiful beaches just a 20-30 minute drive down the coast in East Lothian at Yellowcraigs, Gullane & North Berwick.
